History

The history of Capitolium Toulouse is linked to the ancient city of Tolosa, which was founded by the Romans in the 4th century BC. The city was a major center of trade and commerce and became the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Aquitania in the 2nd century BC. The Capitolium was the most important structure in the city, as it housed the temples dedicated to the gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. It was also the site of the imperial mint, where coins were produced.

The city of Tolosa was sacked by the Visigoths in the 5th century AD and the Capitolium was destroyed. It was then abandoned and forgotten until it was rediscovered in the 19th century. Archaeological excavations were carried out in the late 19th century and early 20th century, which revealed the impressive remains of the Capitolium.
