Basilica Cistern is one of the most iconic attractions in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in the 6th century, the underground cistern was used to provide the city with fresh water. It is the largest of the several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul and is open to the public for visits.

Opening Hours

The Basilica Cistern is open daily, except Mondays, from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. On Sundays and public holidays, the opening hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Ticket Prices

The ticket prices for Basilica Cistern are as follows:

  • Adults (18+): 20 TL
  • Students (18+): 10 TL
  • Children (6-17): 5 TL
  • Children (under 6): Free


The Basilica Cistern has a range of facilities available for visitors, including:

Photography is allowed in the Basilica Cistern but without the use of a tripod or flash. Tripods and flashes are not permitted in the cistern.

The Basilica Cistern is located in Sultanahmet Square, in the heart of Istanbul’s old city. It is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus and tram stops located nearby.
