Two years in the Forbidden City
Introduction
China’s Forbidden City is a magnificent palace complex located in the heart of Beijing. For most of its history, the Forbidden City was off-limits to outsiders, accessible only to the emperor, his family, and select members of the royal court. Today, the Forbidden City is a public museum and a popular tourist attraction.
My Experience
Two years ago, I had the opportunity to live and work in Beijing as an English language teacher. I was thrilled to find out that my apartment was just a stone’s throw away from the Forbidden City. As a history enthusiast, I was determined to explore every inch of the 720,000 square meter complex.
Exploration
Over the next two years, I visited the Forbidden City countless times. The sheer size of the complex meant that there was always something new to discover. Each visit, I would pick a different section to explore in depth. From the imposing Gate of Heavenly Peace to the ornate Palace of Supreme Harmony, the Forbidden City never ceased to amaze me.
Hidden Gems
One of my favorite parts of the Forbidden City was the Imperial Garden. Nestled in the northern corner of the complex, the garden was a peaceful oasis in the bustling city. It was filled with delicate flowers, bonsai trees, and ancient rock formations. Another hidden gem was the Hall of Supreme Harmony.
