Monte Alban is an ancient Zapotec archaeological site located in the Oaxaca Valley of Mexico. It is one of the most important and impressive pre-Hispanic sites in the Americas and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
History
Monte Alban was founded in the late Pre-Classic period (500 BCE – 200 CE) by the Zapotecs, a Mesoamerican people who lived in the region. It was the political and cultural center of the Zapotec state for more than a thousand years, until the site was abandoned in the late Post-Classic period (1200 – 1521 CE).
Architecture
The site is characterized by its monumental architecture, which includes pyramids, plazas, terraces, and a ball court. The main plaza is surrounded by two large pyramids and several smaller ones, and is flanked by two ball courts. The site also features a number of other important buildings, including the Temple of the Danzantes, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Moon.
Artifacts
Monte Alban is home to a variety of artifacts, including pottery, sculptures, and carved stone monuments. The most famous of these artifacts is the Danzantes Stone, which depicts a group of dancing figures in a ritualistic setting. Other notable artifacts include the Tomb 7 Burial, which contained the remains of a woman and a variety of precious items, and the carved stone columns known as the Danzantes Columns.
Conservation
Monte Alban is an important archaeological site and is protected by the Mexican government. It is managed by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which is responsible for the conservation and protection of the site. INAH has undertaken a number of conservation projects at Monte Alban, including the restoration of the main plaza and the construction of a museum.
Visiting Monte Alban
Monte Alban is open to visitors year-round, and is a popular tourist destination. The site can be accessed by bus or car, and guided tours are available. Visitors can explore the site and view the artifacts and monuments, as well as take part in special events such as the Danzantes Festival, which is held every year in October.
