History
The theater was originally founded by two brothers, Charles and Louis Gaumont, in 1894. The brothers were inspired by the popularity of the Lumière brothers’ cinematograph, which had been invented in 1895. The Gaumont brothers wanted to create a larger and more luxurious movie theater to show their films. They chose the prestigious location of the Champs-Élysées for their theater, and it quickly became one of the most popular in Paris.
The theater was renovated in 1922 to accommodate larger audiences, and in the 1930s, it began to host premieres of some of the most famous films of the era. It was also the site of the first Cinémathèque Française in 1938, which is now one of the most important archives of French film. In 1947, the theater was sold to Pathé, and it has remained in the Pathé family ever since.
