Paul Wallot was the architect of the Reichstag Building, the iconic home of the German parliament in Berlin. Early Career
Paul Wallot was born in Erfurt, Prussia, in 1841. He studied at the Royal Academy of Architecture in Berlin and graduated in 1865. After graduation, he worked as an assistant to the noted architect Friedrich Hitzig, who had designed the first Reichstag building in 1871. In 1876, Wallot established his own practice and began to design his own buildings.
The Reichstag Building
In 1884, Wallot was commissioned to design the new Reichstag building, to replace the one destroyed by fire in 1872. He designed a magnificent building in the Neo-Renaissance style, with a central cupola, four large wings and a grand entrance hall. The building was completed in 1894, and it remains an iconic symbol of German democracy to this day.
