History of the Berlin Wall Memorial
The Berlin Wall Memorial was created in 1998, on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The memorial was initiated by a group of citizens, who wanted to create a lasting tribute to the victims of the Wall. The group worked with the Berlin Senate and the Federal Ministry of the Interior to develop the concept for the memorial.
The memorial was designed by architect Peter Eisenman, who was also responsible for the design of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. The Berlin Wall Memorial opened to the public in October of 1998.
