The Jardin botanique de Vincennes is a 5.5-hectare botanical garden located in the city of Vincennes, on the edge of the Marne-Rhine Canal. The garden is open daily without charge. It is one of the four botanical gardens of the City of Paris.

History

The Jardin botanique de Vincennes was created in 1855, when the City of Paris acquired the property of the castle of Vincennes. It was the first public garden in Paris and the first of its kind in France. The garden was designed by landscape architect Jean-Baptiste Barillet-Deschamps, who also designed the gardens of Versailles.

In 1877, the garden was expanded to include a greenhouse, a palm house, and a large pond. In 1898, the garden was further expanded to include a medicinal plant garden and a pond for aquatic plants. In the 1930s, the garden was further expanded to include an arboretum, a cactus garden, and a rock garden.
