Disneyland Shanghai, located in Pudong, Shanghai, China, is the first Disneyland resort in mainland China. Opened in June 2016, the resort is the largest of the six Disney parks around the world, and the only one to be owned and operated by the Chinese government and Shanghai Shendi Group. The resort covers an area of 963 acres, making it the largest Disney theme park in the world.

History of Disneyland Shanghai

The idea of a Disneyland park in mainland China was first proposed by then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner in the late 1990s. After years of negotiations, a deal was finally reached between the Walt Disney Company and the Shanghai government in November 2009. Construction of the park began in April 2011 and the official groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2011. Construction of the resort was completed in June 2016, and the grand opening was held on June 16, 2016.

Attractions at Disneyland Shanghai

Disneyland Shanghai features many of the classic attractions found in other Disney parks around the world, as well as several unique attractions that can only be found in the Shanghai park. The resort has seven themed areas, each with its own attractions and entertainment offerings. The seven themed areas are:

  • Mickey Avenue: This area is themed after the classic Disney characters and features attractions such as Mickey’s Philharmagic and The Lion King: Concert in the Wild.
  • Fantasyland: This area is home to many classic Disney attractions, including Peter Pan’s Flight, It’s a Small World, and Snow White’s Scary Adventures.
  • Adventure Isle: This area is home to several thrilling rides, including Roaring Rapids and Soaring Over the Horizon.
  • Gardens of Imagination: This area features many attractions for younger children, such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Alice in Wonderland.
  • Treasure Cove: This area is themed after the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and features the ride Battle for the Sunken Treasure.
  • Tomorrowland: This area is home to the high-speed roller coaster TRON Lightcycle Power Run.
  • Toy Story Land: This area is themed after the popular Pixar movie series and features the Slinky Dog Spin ride.

Shopping and Dining at Disneyland Shanghai

Disneyland Shanghai offers a wide variety of shopping and dining options. The resort features more than 50 retail stores, ranging from Disney-themed stores to luxury boutiques. There are also more than 30 restaurants and cafes offering a variety of cuisines, including Chinese, American, and European.

Accommodation at Disneyland Shanghai

The resort also offers a variety of accommodation options, ranging from budget hotels to luxurious resorts. The Shanghai Disneyland Hotel is the most luxurious of the resort’s hotels, and features rooms with Disney-themed decor, as well as a swimming pool, spa, and restaurant. The Toy Story Hotel and Shanghai Disneyland Hotel are two other luxury hotels located within the resort.
