Exploring the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce: A Guide to Italy's Finest Contemporary Art Museum

The Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce is a contemporary art museum located in Genoa, Italy. The museum was founded in 1989 and is housed in the former convent of San Francesco della Vigna, located in the historical centre of the city. The museum’s permanent collection includes over 1,500 works by Italian and international contemporary artists, ranging from the 1950s to the present day.

History of the Museum

The Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce was established in 1989, thanks to the initiative of the philanthropist and art collector Giuliana Setari. Setari had previously purchased the convent of San Francesco della Vigna, a 14th century building located in the historical centre of Genoa, and had transformed it into a cultural centre for the city.

In the early 1980s, Setari donated her personal collection of over 1,000 works of contemporary art to the city of Genoa, with the aim of creating a museum dedicated to contemporary art. The collection includes works by Italian and international artists, including works by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Schifano, Gianni Piacentino, and others.

Collection and Exhibitions

The permanent collection of the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce includes over 1,500 works of art, ranging from the 1950s to the present day. The collection is divided into four main sections: painting, sculpture, installation, and video art. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, and has organized numerous international exhibitions in collaboration with other institutions.

The museum also has a library and a research centre dedicated to contemporary art. The library houses a collection of books, catalogues, and periodicals related to contemporary art, as well as a video library containing over 600 titles. The research centre organizes seminars and conferences, and offers scholarships and residencies for artists and researchers.

The Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce offers a wide range of educational programmes for all ages. The museum’s educational programmes include guided tours, workshops, and activities for schools and families.
