Jardin botanique alpin La Jaÿsinia is a botanical garden located in La Jaÿsinia, in the Hautes-Alpes department of France. It is the only botanical garden in the Alps and the only one in France to be dedicated solely to alpine plants. The garden was created in 1984 by the local municipality and is now managed by the General Council of Hautes-Alpes. It is open every day in the summer and on weekends during the rest of the year.


The idea of creating a botanical garden in La Jaÿsinia was first suggested in 1981. A team of local volunteers and professionals was formed to begin the project. The site was chosen for its location at an altitude of 1250 meters, which is ideal for the cultivation of alpine plants. After two years of preparation, the garden was officially opened in 1984.


The garden covers an area of 5 hectares and is divided into two main sections. The first section is the alpine garden, which is divided into four distinct areas: the Alpine Garden, the Alpine Meadow, the Mediterranean Garden and the Mediterranean Meadow. Each area is dedicated to a specific type of alpine plant, such as wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and trees. The second section is the botanical garden, which features a wide variety of plants from around the world.


The garden offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages. Themed guided tours are available, as well as educational activities such as workshops and lectures. The garden also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as concerts, exhibitions and workshops.


The garden has a large collection of alpine plants, with more than 2,000 species from all over the world. These include rare and endangered species, as well as plants that are adapted to extreme climates. The garden also has an extensive collection of medicinal plants and herbs.

Visiting the Garden

The garden is open every day from April to October, with reduced opening hours during the rest of the year. Admission is free and the garden is wheelchair accessible. There is also a café and gift shop on site.
